Goa is hosting Nation’s first Unified Beach Cricket match

As a prelude to the Purple Fest to begin on January 6, the first-ever Unified Beach Cricket tournament, conducted by Special Olympics Bharat was inaugurated today at Miramar Beach.

The event was inaugurated by the Minister for Social Welfare Subhash Phal Dessai, Kedar Naik, MLA of Saligao Constituency, Guruprasad Pawaskar, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Goa, Rohit Monserrate, Mayor of Panjim, Shri Taha Haaziq, Secretary of State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Sandhya Kamat, Directorate of Social Welfare and Shri Victor R. Vaz, National Sports Director and Special Olympics Bharat.

On the occasion, Minister of Social Welfare, Subhash Phaldesai said, the Office of Social Welfare, are working day and night like volunteers. But, somebody has to take this challenge and go forward and show that persons with disabilities deserve dignity and empowerment.”

The Minister further said, the goal is to give Persons with Disability (PwD) education and give them the placements in all areas such as sports, entertainment, education and other departments. “We are starting sports for persons with disability and cricket being everybody’s favourite, should be made available for them to play as well too. This is why Victor Vaz brought this sport to Goa in hope that it will be played everywhere in India,” he added.

Kedar Naik, MLA of Saligao said, facilities like E-Rickshaw, Wheel chair etc, with all these initiatives, we are going forward. We need to help and respect each child with disability and this is the right platform.”

Guruprasad Pawaskar, Commissioner of Persons with Disability, said, what other sport can bring people together other than cricket? It is a joy to see young children with disability come together to have fun and show their skills through Unified Beach Cricket.”

Taha Haaziq, Secretary of State Commission for Persons with Disabilities in Goa also spoke on the occasion.
