Leena Manimekalai’s old tweets go viral; ‘I will surrender my citizenship if…’

Toronto-based filmmaker Leena Manimekalai found herself in soup after she dropped the poster of her documentary Kaali on July 2, on Twitter. The poster depicts a character dressed as Hindu goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette and holding a trident in one hand and an LGBTQ flag in the other.

Now, her old tweets on PM Narendra Modi, Hindutva are going viral amid controversy. A 2013 tweet of the filmmaker has surfaced the internet where she wrote, “I will surrender my passports, rationcard, pancard and my citizenship if ever Modi becomes this country’s PM in my lifetime. I swear!’

In 2020, the filmmaker tweeted, “Ram is not God. He is just a BJP invented the Electronic voting machine.”

After the outrage of people over the controversial Kaali poster, Indian High Commission in Toronto with the Canadian authorities, canceled the screening of the film. Later, Toronto Metropolitan University and the Aga Khan Museum issued apologies for hurting the sentiments.
